From Vanua to Virtual: NiuPay at NCIT 2026
Fiji’s technology community gathered at the Shangri-La Yanuca Island Resort in August for the 7th National Conference on Information Technology (NCIT), hosted by Fiji National University’s National Training and Productivity Centre (NTPC), and the NiuPay team was glad to be there for both days as a Bronze sponsor. This year’s theme was “From Vanua to Virtual: People, Trust and Technology Driving a Secure, Trusted and Productive Digital Pacific”.
Opening the conference, Deputy Prime Minister Hon. Manoa Kamikamica said a secure and trusted digital environment is now as essential to doing business in Fiji as reliable roads, power and water. He set out the Government’s 2030 targets, including 80 per cent of key government services digitalised, 40,000 ICT jobs, 50 per cent 5G coverage and a National ID.
What stayed with us
Sessions ranged from meaningful digital access for Pacific communities, internet governance and DNS security to cyber sovereignty, agentic AI in real enterprises and AI-driven security operations. Three things stayed with us:
- Digital sovereignty is now part of how Pacific agencies buy technology.
- Trust is what decides how quickly people take up digital services.
- The skills pipeline, and especially the work to bring more women into technology roles, will decide how far these strategies go.
A special mention to Ofa Lagonilakeba, the youngest panellist at this year’s conference, who used her time on stage to speak for the young people coming through the sector across the region. NiuPay supports the Pacific Women in STEM and PacificWiT programmes.
